In it for the long haul.Me too, maybe a couple more decades if I'm brave enough, or somethin' like that.
I'm gonna call this the 'Day Bolt', because the amount of time it's going to take to get it out might well be a measurement in days.
The first bolt came out about twenty times easier. These alternator bolts are about four inches long by about a quarter inch diameter. This bolt starting coming out pretty good, but then started to get tight, which is now a periodic occurrence. So when it happens we re-douse it with bolt blaster and take a break.
Given the workspace and positioning of the ratchet I'm only getting a single click at a time which seems to be requiring roughly seventy five pounds of force, give or take - a wild guess, but it's a lot.
Got it out about a half inch so far, but I'm hoping there will come a point where it starts coming out easier. Top bolt and power cables after that.
Probably alternate between that and all the other mundane shit I gotta do.
Top bolt and cables next.
Edit : better video. I'm like the fucking Lawnmower Man. I'm just taking samples, and don't wanna listen to the whole thing until I'm ready. Yeah, it's dicey I know, but we hope for the best and it usually works out pretty good.
I did go outside to have a look at getting the alternator out. One cable came off like nothing, wish many things were as easy, but the other, once I pulled back the plastic cap thing the bolt is all rusted to fuck underneath.
Maybe some PB blaster on that rusted bolt and give it a try, but if worst comes to worst I'll take a hack saw blade out there and cut it off, but first I should try and find a diagram of that lead to be sure what it is exactly I am cutting : RE : it's better to be safe than sorry :)
Forget about going under and looking up. Given the range of motion and orientation it appears as though a vertical cutting motion would be most appropriate.
I do have a virgin hacksaw blade, maybe go outside at some point and murder that bitch.
Well we finally got the alternator out after cutting through a sizeable piece of metal, so now we get to go to the auto parts store and get a replacement, and then, after that I can start putting my car back together, AND THEN, maybe I can indulge in a bit more chemistry after that., AND THEN, AND THEN...
Chemistry, fuck yeah
Was informed to also replace battery, but since alternator charges battery we'll try that first and I don't usually listen to people half the time anyway, like Ron White, yeah, like him.
Made a huge mess bleeding the system again, probably should invest in one of those reservoir extensions for once more this time, possibly, but definitely for next time.
Maybe some more coolant and a large zip tie to finish tidying and I think I'm good to go.
We start opposite the valve stem and progress a few degrees at a time which is pretty much toe to toe. Definitely right in the middle of this and can feel the changes, and that's the ultimate test, like feeling and waiting for the pinnacle of this constructive resonance to occur by all four, or something close to that.
