    We Are NOT Equals

This word, "Equality" is being thrown around entirely too much these days.  It's being misused, misunderstood, and misrepresented to the point ...

The word "equal" can vary via how it is used. However, I agree with your stance. Thus the tag on my profile stating "You are not my equal". Kudos sir.

I think "we are all equal" is generally used to indicate that we all have certain "inborn, natural rights" such as the right to life, property, freedom etc. However, it was covered some time ago in the forums there is no such a thing as natural rights. All "rights" we have are granted to us by the society and they can be taken away. Equality also means equality before the law, which is bullshit, I think. If you are rich, smart and influential, you can certainly get away with more. Even in death we are not equals. Some die peacefully in their beds, others die slowly in agony.I think "we are all equal" is generally used to indicate that we all have certain "inborn, natural rights" such as the right to life, property, freedom etc. However, it was covered...See more

    luz,
There is no inherent equality in humans from birth, either. We are all born with variables. The argument you presented is an example of misuse of the word. We all have skeletons, but there are variables. It's not necessarily a matter of lesser than, or greater than, it's simply not equal.

    Similarity is not equality.

    Org,
    I hadn't noticed that, awesomeness!

    Anna,
Yes, that's my beef. Equality should not be a word thrown around so haphazardly in politics, because it's original meaning will be inevitably lost.

I've thought a lot about this issue in the past an have come to the conclusion that "equality" only comes into play when you are engaged in a social contract. In that sense I can get behind it. It's good business for governments to treat citizens equally, but as has been stated already...that hardly ever works out.

Bottom line is that equality is an ideal...and ideals are never perfect in application. I'm not saying that ideals aren't important, but pretending that they are reality is simply foolish.

Everyone's equal...the good guy always wins...there's no such thing as racism...same shit different story book.

    Now...playing devil's advocate against myself:

Just because equality isn't an end all be all to everything doesn't mean I don't employ it in my own philosophy and life. For example, every stranger I meet I try to treat the same. In my mind there is no reason to treat one individual differently than another if I have no background knowledge about them. I strive towards this because I feel that by doing so I gain the advantage of not alienating people who could possibly be of some use (or amusement) to me in the future just because I had a head ache or I didn't sleep well, or whatever the case may be. Equality is more of a Stoic concept for me than a humanitarian one.

Pressing deeper...it doesn't always work out that way. Sometimes I just feel like being a dick (It's rare but it happens). Sometimes I misunderstand a person's actions or words as hostile when they are in fact not...or vice versa.

Sometimes I just get a feeling about a person (either positive or negative) and thus my actions play off of that.

And of course if I've had a bad experience with an individual in the past I feel no need to treat them as I do people I like (what Satanist would?).

Final thought: Ideals are like vanishing points...useful when constructing things on paper...but imaginary.

    Babylon,

The agenda of those who misrepresent the term Equality is nauseatingly transparent to any critical thinker. Make powerful the weak, make powerless the strong. I totally agree. The fun part in all of it is that nature is indifferent to the Will of humanity. Nature always wins.
