I have three main options. New York to San Fran, I can drive there, fly there, or take the greyhound. Any travelers here with similar expertise on embarking on such a journey? And are there any travelers currently amidst the so-called pandemic? Lastly, I have never been to the west coast. Only one I know lives there is Zach himself. Any west-coasters (Californians specifically) that can give me an idea of what it's like?

Cheers!

P.S. Sorry for the dumbass title! But it did grab your attention, did it not?

West coast best options are Diego  , San Fran , Seattle or LA.   All depends on what you are looking for...where you live and how much time and money you got. I have been to all of  these cities and lived in all to. I listed in the order I liked best .

California is a union nepotistic nanny state and financial nightmare of survival of the fittest. Minimum salary to survive on your own is 65k and about 30k with roommates or another income.  The cost of commodities is about 30% higher in the major metro areas, and the only place where cost/value is doable without being 80th percentile or above (top 20%) are; Modesto, Fresno, Visalia, or Bakersfield.  The muggy ass San Jaoquin Valley (Central Valley).  But then you have a lateral move to the trailer parks and religious meth addicts of Arizona or Oklahoma.

The politics in the major cities (Big 3) are Far Left of Center, except the San Diego area, because of the Military transplant population.  The Aforementioned Central Valley is conservative leaning.

It's the land competition for whatever you are after and the streets are lined with punters and failed seekers that were firmly trashed by their own delusions.

Other states send their homeless they are sick of dealing with here, and some parts of the core urban areas smell like a New York subway.  In San Fran, watch out for syringes lining the sidewalk, and prepare for the definition of wealth inequity.

It's beautiful.  The weather is great (in Southern), but it comes at a price.

But if you can afford it, and are willing to pay the highest taxes in the country, and are willing to pay 10 years after you leave to prevent you from leaving, all are welcome.

Just don't do what I did and create a financial nightmare a la bankruptcy you will never recover from. Where Phoenix becomes the metaphorical place to rise from the ashes of excruciating debt.

I appreciate you giving it to me straight. I've lived in New York most of my life so I know how it is being taxed to hell and having not much to show for it. The plan is for Frisco to be my "proxy" place to the rest of the area.

I have some friends nearby who want me to come for the winter. I plan on trying to stay out of the major cities as best I can. Workaway is also on the options list. If I'm gonna be there a while, I will need to find a stable income and any accommodation that's sufficient.

I will give updates on how it goes if you're interested. Cheers!
