That scene is quite ironic given the pessimistic climate of the whole movie. While God enslaves the man with his ridiculous rules, Satan is another sadistic master making the man a slave to his instincts. Just when the main protagonist shoots his head off in the name of free will, he is taken back in time to repeat the game over again, making the same shitty choices all over again that lead to his inevitable demise and fulfillment of Satan's will. Although Satan merely sets the stage and Kevin is free to leave at any time (make a different choice), the crux of the matter is that he cannot leave, being the slave to his own nature, that he cannot escape his own destiny (determinism?) As if the director of the movie wanted to say that only God and Satan have their own free will while the man is merely the pawn played by those two.That scene is quite ironic given the pessimistic climate of the whole movie.
