SORCERER'S LIE
I will tell you a story that isn’t true.
Don’t believe a word of it. Every sorcerer must have his lie. This is mine.
Out of flame and sulfurous smoke stepped
Satan into the cavern. He had chosen to manifest with the horns, hooves, and
tail of an antelope. He said gently and quietly, “All eyes and all ears on me,”
and behold, he was instantly obeyed by all the legions of Hell.
“I call twelve of my most beloved to
stand before me,” said Satan. “To each I shall give a new name.”
All the myriad hordes waited breathlessly
in suspense. Who were the most beloved of Satan?
“Ayn Rand, step forward,” came the
command from the regal lips. He was obeyed. “I name you Rationality.”
“Galileo Galilei, step forward,” came the
command, which was obeyed. “I name you Empiricism.”
“Charles Darwin, step forward,” came the
command, which was obeyed. “I name you Materialism.”
“Voltaire, step forward,” came the
command, which was obeyed. “I name you Atheism.”
“Sigmund Freud, step forward,” came the
command, which was obeyed. “I name you Carnality.”
“Giacomo Casanova, step forward,” came the
command, which was obeyed. “I name you Appetite.”
“George Gordon Byron, step forward,” came
the command, which was obeyed. “I name you Passion.”
“Friedrich Nietzsche, step forward,” came
the command, which was obeyed. “I name you Catharsis.”
“Henry Louis Mencken, step forward,” came
the command, which was obeyed. “I name you Cynicism.”
“Gustave Flaubert, step forward,” came
the command, which was obeyed. “I name you Disgust.”
“Temujin, Genghis Khan, step forward,”
came the command, which was obeyed. “I name you Severity.”
“Heraclitus, step forward,” came the
command, which was obeyed. “I name you Distance.”
“BEHOLD!” roared Satan. “I give you: my
Twelve Apostles!”
The cavern, in all its height, width, and
length, reverberated with deafening cheers.
Satan then said, “But there is more.” Satan
then transformed into Lucifer, who manifested with the great leathery wings of
a pterodactyl, and the pinkish-white skin, white hair, and pinkish eyes of an
albino mortal. Lucifer said, “Rationality, Cynicism, and Disgust, approach into
my presence,” and he was obeyed by the ones who had been Ayn Rand, Henry Louis Mencken,
and Gustave Flaubert. “You three Apostles,” said Lucifer, “Shall found and foster
the Order of the Fallen, which shall be dedicated to the principles for which
you are now named, and whose champion shall be Lucifer, the Morning Star.”
Satan then transformed into Beelzebub, who
manifested as a common housefly, wings buzzing, six legs curled inward, five
eyes alertly watching those who could barely see him, so small was he. Beelzebub
said, “Carnality, Appetite, and Passion, approach into my presence,” and he was
obeyed by the ones who had been Sigmund Freud, Giacomo Casanova, and George
Gordon Byron. “You three Apostles,” said Beelzebub, “Shall found and foster the
Order of the Fly, which shall be dedicated to the principles for which you are
now named, and whose champion shall be Beelzebub, Lord of the Flies.”
Satan then transformed into Belphegor,
who manifested as a beautiful naked woman whose jet black hair reached to the
floor in a voluptuous cascade. Belphegor said, “Empiricism, Materialism, and
Atheism, approach into my presence,” and he (or she) was obeyed by the ones who
had been Galileo Galilei, Charles Darwin, and Voltaire. “You three Apostles,”
said Belphegor, “Shall found and foster the Order of Moab, which shall be
dedicated to the principles for which you are now named, and whose champion
shall be Belphegor, the Beauteous One.”
Satan then transformed into Leviathan,
who manifested as a gargantuan finned serpent, barely able to fit within the
confines of the cavern, and whose gills went unused in the dry and smoky space.
Leviathan said, “Catharsis, Severity, and Distance, approach into my presence,”
and he was obeyed by the ones who had been Friedrich Nietzsche, Genghis Khan,
and Heraclitus. “You three Apostles,” said Leviathan, “Shall found and foster
the Order of the Sea Beast, which shall be dedicated to the principles for
which you are now named, and whose champion shall be Leviathan, the Dweller in
the Deep.”
And with that, there was an
ear-shattering thunderclap, and Satan in all his guises was gone, and gone as
well were the Twelve Apostles. All was silence and wonderment.
