I didn't know much about Michael Aquino until I heard some of his interviews on Youtube recently. The Temple of Set was a dissident faction of the Church of Satan that went in a different direction.
In general I think I like Anton Lavey's writing better. I recently read Mind War by Michael Aquino and did not care for it. It was too much like science fiction. Books by the Temple of Set are a lot harder to find than books by the Church of Satan. Has anyone read any of their books? What is the difference between the two organizations? I will post Aquino's interviews below.

Look for yourself and compare. I read Xeper site a couple of years ago, it looked a bit different and I don't remember much. And I'm not willing to read it once again. The ToS doesn't interest me.
One thing is certain. The Church of Satan is atheistic. The Temple of Set is theistic. Satan under the name of Set is for them a real entity.
The only book by Aquino that I read is "Church of Satan". I read bits and pieces of it because it's terribly long. It wasn't bad but I agree with you that Anton LaVey was a more gifted writer.
