Why celebrate Christmas? from AlexTheTerrible's blog

This might be a short blog, and maybe just a rant also. I find it interesting that a lot of non Christians (Neo-Pagans included) would celebrate Christmas. Christmas has gotten so cliche to the point where its shoved down your throat 24/7, with porn stars dressing up as Santa's helpers, to the point where you have horrible Christmas rock music playing in the background, to the point where you have ridiculous Christmas adds on alcoholic beverages with Christmas music playing. Now I get it that a lot of people would consider it a secular holiday with family and all to celebrate it. But where I come from, I don't see the point on celebrating a holiday that commemorates Christ's birth. So I find it funny seeing posts on social media by Neo Pagans and Satanists celebrating that holiday.

I personally prefer Yule, as a matter of fact I'm planning something out this year on Yule. So, no matter if Christmas is considered an "American Tradition," why celebrate a holiday that was originally Christian oriented? I want this question to stick in the minds of Heathens and Satanists reading this.

Blame Constantine for first deciding that The Iman of Jewish supremacy needed his birth commemorated in place of the Roman pagan Saturnalia. From there it bounced around in transcultural fashion until it corrupted every season or not judeocentric celebration. It's christianities thing. I actually like the completely commercialized version. Closer to OG Saturnalia in its gifting, feasting, slothful elements, but still has a winter theme like Yule.Blame Constantine for first deciding that The Iman of Jewish supremacy needed his birth commemorated in place of the Roman pagan Saturnalia. It could be nostalgia for the time of childhood. Christmas has that special atmosphere for kids; gifts, Christmas carols, Christmas tree; it has some charm also for adults. Conformity comes into play here too. I would say it's even more important than anything else. When everyone is celebrating, decorating the home and meeting with the family and friends, non-participation can be painful. I once had a friend who was some sort of a belligerent atheist. When the Christmas came, she felt like shit. The reason was that everyone around her was celebrating and having fun while she was sitting alone at home. Not because she had no other options but she refused to celebrate because of anti-theistic anger issues. But it bothered her to that extent she waited for the whole holiday to pass. This is what she said.

I see nothing wrong or hypocritical with Atheists celebrating Christmas. It doesn't have to be a religious holiday. It became secularized anyway. And it's too great an opportunity for commerce. It seems it's in nobody's interest to encourage the boycott of Christmas.
