For the last many years I have been fine tuning my skills and techniques in the form of painting/creating things that some may call "art"

There is most certainly an artistic process that comes into play and each artists ritual is unique. But, too often than not, I get stuck in a rut of having a lack creative energy, motivation or inspiration.

This is extremely upsetting for me because this certain muse is one I take great joy and pride in doing. I relish the times I spend alone in my make-shift studio with my thoughts and just let everything else go. It's an outlet for me to say the least.

I have a big art show coming in October with at least 10 paintings and mixed media works started.

I've come to a screeching halt in production and I'm not sure why. I've tried various things to try and kick start the creative flow. For example: I've visited the art museum, gone out to places I've never been and talked with new people I've never met, smoked a bunch of weed, drank in excess, visited various art showings and talked with the artist, read different books, and literally have sat in the studio staring at what I need to work on for hours on end(usually while smoking and drinking).

It still won't come to me. It's really starting to mess with me.

So, if anyone has any good advice on how I could get back on the right track, It'd be much appreciated.

What works for you? What inspires you? This is a call to all artists.

Thanks in advance

Just from what you have written here I see a parallel with a few stages I have been through. I often had these creative blocks where I could not see anything through to the end. My issue was one of my passions had become my job and that just sucked the joy right out of it.

I would ask how much this art show means to you as I think you need to take time off from doing work for others and rediscover what you got out of creating for just yourself. Has your passion become an obligation and if so can you step back from it?

I agree with Nith. Do something FUN.

I find that I am mostly creative when experiencing excitement or loss. Usually, it's enough to throw on some music and let it do the work of pulling things out of me.

I often feel the most creative when I am emotional. Catharsis produces the best art, for it is truly honest and genuine.

When feeling apathetic, try doing something you've never done before. The world offers a wealth of experiences. One must simply rise to the world's challenges. Test the bounds of existence. Become a friend of danger; a warrior of Darkness.

Excuse my brief absence and delay on reply to this post.

All of you had very helpful input on the subject that I brought up.

To begin, Nith had a very good points across the board. My job as a lighting designer has become one of my biggest passions but subsequently has had all the fun sucked out of it. This is due to a NEWLY established "No drinking" rule and a mandatory dress code while working. In the past I use to be able to have a few drinks and get into not only the music but the environment I'm around, as well as converse with friends etc.

Not being able to conduct myself as I like (and how I had been) has definitely made an impact on my work. Sometimes in actual quality and most other times in personal satisfaction. Its hard for me to even take a compliment most time. I usually think I can do far better and in truth have done so.

I personally qualify lighting design as an artistic outlet and as I have said before, everyone has their own artistic process. Possibly, my frustration at work also plays a role in my art I create in my spare time as well.

Due to finances (hardly paying my bills), I have little time to step away from my job as a lighting designer. I have been dying for a holiday and to see friends that live abroad. Also I don't wish to give up my position just yet, as of now I am the only designer that works at this club and have done all the programming myself. Also, I have been creating quite a bit of hype with my skills and have many chances of being on tour with big name artists.

On the other hand, I have also been commissioned by a few people to paint them personal artwork. This is exciting but really don't see myself being internationally known for my dabbles.

So, Should I just focus on one main thing? Put everything I've got to make it big and go on tour?

Quote from luz Force yourself to start painting and not worry about what you paint - just freestyle it
This is great to hear from you Luz. To be honest this is what I use to do. Often I would just start painting without any direction. I did usually end up painting over these works but maybe I need to bring it back to the basics? I didn't really think of it like that. Thanks~

Theinverted: You have been to long in the  ' lighting,  now is the time for you to get into the "darkening" . Go to a place where it's completely dark and stay there, stay there,  sleep there,  stay there,  that will reset your focus on painting,  it's because darkness is not a color " ( you must know that) ,and that will increase your appetite for colors. It has worked for me.
