The subject of necromancy has always interested me.

I generally lean toward the stance that the "supernatural" is often a projection of an individual's subconscious, or even a projection of a collective subconsciousness, rather than as an external phenomenon.

BUT, I always try to keep an open mind, and live by the mantra "there is always more to learn".

So... Are spirits of the dead a reality? Can they be made to do one's bidding?

Does anyone have any experience in this field of practice? Thoughts? Explanations? Experiences? Disbelief?

When I was a teenager I used to hear my mother talking to the spirit of dead people, I used to see the candles twisting and bending while  she was doing the talking, but I never believed it, I always thought that it was in the power of her mind, to probe my point I used to go and slept in the local cemetery to contact the spirits, I did that hundreds of long nights, all of them were the most peaceful nights I've ever slept, and none of a good or evil spirit has come to me.

I view necromancy in the same way I view fortune telling: literally callin forth the dead isn't real, but there are a lot of people in the world who believe in it - especially RHPers who are supposed to shun the black arts. I come from a very Catholic family and most of the women in my family believe in some form of divination; they are fans of John Edwards and tarot cards, etc. As a result, I, personally, view these dark arts as powerful manipulative tools which lie between Lesser Magic and Greater Magic.

Despite being mere parlor tricks, with the right people seeking out fortunes or séances and the right amount of knowledge you could likely easily manipulate people to get what you want out of them by convincing them of your power.

Is any of this making sense or am I talking out of my ass?

I think it could be fun to learn the tactics and play with people. What do you guys think about this?

(I apologize if this seems insulting. The more I read the posts, the more it seems you are interested in literal, theistic necromancy and I am not intending to insult your beliefs. I was just stating some thoughts I had on the subject.)

Although, I can see a form of necromancy being invoked in ritual, say, as opposed to "summoning demonic influences" one could "summon the sprits (not literal spirits, obviously) of the dead" in a form of 'ancestor worship' I guess; ancestral influence over a magical working.

Quote from FraterMoloch Necromancy is originally not the communication with the ghosts but with the dead by commanding a spirit (more correct a demon) into the corpse so the dead could raise and speak to the magician...
See the bold for the contradiction. Wouldn't they be the same? After the body dies, what's left? Ghost is just Geist which is just spirit which is just soul. Which is why Dimitri is 100% correct here. Software requires hardware in order to run. No hardware, no run.

I used to see spirits as a youngster then I realized I was just disturbed by a troubled past and as I have forgiven and learned from my past the visuals no longer bother me.

I just found a funeral home where I live and just stood in silence (it was almost 2am, so there was no one out) it was the most peaceful feeling. Death has always been an interesting consciousness to me because it doesn't speak of anything, but always has a sense of peace and comfort to it whether I am sober, high, drunk, or sleeping.

Ancestor worship has always seemed silly to me. Why worship something dead when you have loved ones that are still breathing and giving you a hard time?

I really don't see necromancy as an escapist or beyond-ist mindset but a way to understand the void of being and inner comfort. Even when working with 'spirits of the dead' I am not trying to understand death or help grieve because I will experience death sooner or later and grieving is a natural process, but I work within the realm of Death to have a sense of peace in the here and now and realize change is a tool for transformation, even if that change means annihilation of this or that. All the spirits do is help remind me of the wonders of the past or to revisit the feelings a dead friends. It's more about emotion of what the concept of death brings not reaching beyond.

"So... Are spirits of the dead a reality? Can they be made to do one's bidding?"

Do you mean something like from folklore, legend, myth? And I have no idea. It's generally related to me that minions 'could be fun', but alas, I lack bidding for such a creature to do.

"Does anyone have any experience in this field of practice? Thoughts? Explanations? Experiences? Disbelief?"

I've had some experience dealing with 'psychological interactions of rednecks to their own schema of such things', did quite a bit of fake ghost pictures when I was into hoaxing,  and I know a bit of local folklore.

Thoughts: Twas fun. :)

Explanations: haunted houses are actually haunted by nothing more than a subliminal stimuli which translates into "something's off here" feeling.

Disbelief: I'm more left with a few unexplored theories I never followed up on. So, meh.
